WHO: Lime Cordiale (w/ I Know The Chief and Castlecomers)
WHERE: The Toff In Town
WHEN: 2nd November
A beautiful venue is a usually a good indication of a good show, and that’s what was delivered when Lime Cordiale, I Know The Chief and Castlecomers took to the stage.
The Toff In Town served as residence for the Melbourne leg of Lime Cordiale’s ‘Falling Up The Stairs’ EP Tour, an eclectic display of pop and indie sensibilities.
Melbourne locals I Know The Chief were the first to play – a dynamic start drawing immediate attention from the audience. It was like watching a mini-version of UK band Foals, with such exuberance and energy eventually leading to people grooving in their seats. Their songs really drew comparisons to that of Foals but also felt like it was mixed with a bit of The Maccabees and Two Door Cinema Club. Gorgeous harmonies were present the majority of the time, and the five-piece wrapped up their set with an explosive percussion display.
Next up were Castlecomers, and by the time I Know The Chief had wrapped up their set the band room was quickly filling up. Think of Mumford & Sons at a beach, with a lot of beachy vibes – that’s probably the best way to describe this band. Each song had the floor absolutely packed, with just about every song on their setlist igniting a swarm of moving and grooving people of all ages. At times it seemed like each song sounded the same, but some tracks provided excellent contrast and really mixed it up, leaving you with this sense of excitement for what was to follow.
Soon enough Sydney boys Lime Cordiale emerged – and I discovered it was pronounced “cordi-ahl”, which gave them a real sense of sophistication. Long locks of hair were present, which was interesting (what they looked like was not what I expected their music to sound like)! Oozing beautiful indie/pop/rock, it was clear that this band knew what they were doing. Each song was crafted with what seemed like some great pop sensibilities in consideration. Their songs were funky, fun and packed full of brass – when the trombones made an appearance it added a layer of sound that complimented their compositions incredibly well. Like all concerts their set was over before you knew it, and the room was left buzzing with some incredible vibes.
If you’re looking for something new to listen to, or a gig to go to, Lime Cordiale are not to be missed. And remember – it’s cordiahhhl.
